HAMLET — Charles George Payne Sr., 73, of Hamlet, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2023 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital, Pinehurst.
He was born Dec. 30, 1949, son of the late George Jay Payne and Doris Toni Lewis Payne.
Mr. Payne worked as a magistrate in Richmond County for more than 28 years, also serving in other counties during his tenure. He loved to fish, both freshwater and saltwater fishing, and loved being at his place at Holden Beach. He will be missed dearly by his family.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Linda Hatter.
Mr. Payne is survived by his wife, Barbara Brigman Clark of the home; children, Chuck Payne (Amy), Aaron Payne, and Bill Payne (Shana), all of Rockingham, and Charlene Goodwin (Michael), of Rockingham; and nine grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at noon at Richmond Memorial Park with the Rev. Stanley Stogner officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
