HAMLET — Charles Richard Chavis, 78, of Hamlet, passed away Thursday, May 18, 2023 at Richmond County Hospice Haven.
He was born Sept. 1, 1944, in Norfolk, Virginia, son of the late James Lee and Wanita Barry Chavis.
Richard served in the United States Air Force. He worked as a quality specialist with Hood Packaging, from where he retired. He loved to hunt and fish, and loved gardening, winning numerous red and blue ribbons for his gardens. He was also excellent at canning vegetables and fruits and won several awards with the county fair in Hamlet. Richard served as a Girl Scout leader during the years that his daughter, Lisa, was in girl scouts. He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Glennie Chavis Chavis; and brother, Earl Lee Chavis.
Richard is survived by his daughters, Lisa Chavis of Cornelius and Michelle Schnell (Van) of Rockingham; grandchildren, Kevin Schnell and Ariel Schnell Johnson (Josh); great-grandchildren, Jeremiah, Lorelai, and Scottie Johnson, and Cirilla Schnell; brothers, Lester Chavis of Dillon, South Carolina, and Bobby Chavis of Rockingham; sisters, Myra Singletary and Gloria Gaddy, both of Rockingham; numerous nieces and nephews; and his beloved cat, Bob.
Graveside services will be Saturday, May 20, 2023 at 11 a.m. at Richmond Memorial Park, with the Rev. Wayne Greene officiating. Burial will follow after the service at the cemetery.
