OBITUARY: Donald Earl Gainey

HAMLET — Donald “Donnie” Earl Gainey, 74, of Hamlet, passed away Sunday, Aug. 14, 2022 at his residence surrounded by his loving family.

He was born March 20, 1948, in Richmond County, son of the late Maxie Lee Gainey Sr. and Ruby Lucille Eubanks Gainey.

Donnie was a member of Mount Carmel Free Will Baptist Church and was a true man of God. He also enjoyed gospel music. In previous years, he served with Rockingham Fire and Rescue. He loved fishing, especially at the ocean where he made his home for many years in Supply, prior to returning to Hamlet several years ago. He was a NASCAR fan and being the helping man that he was, never met a stranger. Everyone knew him and he was a friend to everyone.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Maxie Lee Gainey Sr. and Ruby Lucille Eubanks Gainey; and sister, Judy Faye Andrews.

Mr. Gainey is survived by his children, Rebecca Gainey Deaver (Derrick), Donna Gainey Williams (Harold) and Brandon Phifer, all of Hamlet; grandchildren, Keonia Williams, Jaylynn Sturdivant, Chrystuan Logan Deaver (Camryn Odom), Kalub Williams, Destyuan Williams, Nina Clark, Heather Locklear, Justin Locklear, Joseph Locklear, Chris Hicks, Raquon Williams, Patrick Tarlton and J’yani Williams; great-grandchildren, Carson Locklear, Anri Williams and Alana Ratliff; brothers, Maxie Lee Gainey Jr. (Susie) of Florida, Charles Gainey (Kathy) and Ronnie Carson Gainey (Ginger), all of Rockingham; special friend, Barbara Webb; best friends, Richard McDonald and Jesse C. Goins; and a host of family and friends.

Visitation will be Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2022 from 6-8 p.m. at Mount Carmel Freewill Baptist Church.

The funeral will be Wednesday, Aug. 17, 2022 at 1 p.m. at Mount Carmel Free Will Baptist Church with Pastor Mike Childers officiating. Burial will follow at Deaver Cemetery.

At other times, the family will receive friends at the home of his daughter, Rebecca Deaver, 132 Broad Leaf Drive, Hamlet.
