After military service, he entered rural family practice in Newton Grove and Four Oaks, North Carolina. Although general “country” practice was an invaluable experience in diagnostic competency and decision making, his primary interest was in pediatrics. He completed pediatric residency at the University of Miami School of Medicine and Jackson Memorial Hospital in 1961. He began his pediatric practice in Fort Pierce in 1962 and retired in 1988. In retirement he lived a full and enjoyable life, visiting many family members, traveling, and his many hobbies.
