OBITUARY: Emma Carol Logan Linker

It is with heavy hearts and profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Emma Carol Logan Linker, beloved mother, wife, sister, grandmother, teacher and friend who God took home from this world on Dec. 7, 2023, surrounded by family members.

Emma Carol Logan was born on March 30, 1941 in the beautiful horse country of Paris (Bourbon County), Kentucky to Bradley Logan and Hazel (Williams) Logan.

She remained here until she departed for college, as a high school junior, to Eastern Kentucky University where she achieved her BA (honors) in English. She then returned and received her Master’s (English). She first taught high school in Maxton before joining the original staff of what was known as RTI (Richmond Technical Institute) in Hamlet/Rockingham. There she remained throughout her career until retirement.

She furthered her education at Case Western and Yale University in the study of America’s first poet laureate, Robert Penn Warren, also a fellow Kentuckian. Emma Carol was one of just a few prominent authorities on his work. She was passionate in her work as an educator, with high standards but also compassion. Students could always count on a quick and sharp wit and a door that was locked when the class bell rang! She was a voracious reader and true lover of literature.

Emma Carol was widely known throughout the county and surrounding areas not just for teaching. She also participated and starred in the community theatre, appearing 13-plus times on the local stage! She appeared in many classics, including “The Price,” “The Gazebo,” and “Arsenic and Old Lace” — just to name a few. Whether a serious role or comedic, she was able put characters into the crowd’s memory each and every time.

She was a longtime member of Sweet Haven Church in Rockingham along with her husband, Dr. Duane Linker.

In the past several years, she loved receiving word and updates about her grandson, Banner, and many pictures and stories were exchanged despite large distances apart.

She leaves behind an incredible wealth of friends, family and loved ones. She is fondly remembered for her devotion to her family, her support of her friends, and the ability to make anyone smile — friend or stranger. Her smile and laugh were infectious.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Duane Linker; sisters, Joella Wallen (Obey – Georgetown, Kentucky) and Judy Logan (Bluffton, South Carolina) and her children whom she loved so much, John (Carrie – Page, Arizona), Rebecca (Rockingham, and Matthew (Jamie – Palm Desert, California). She is also survived by her grandson, Banner Logan Thor-Dodd.

She will be dearly missed by family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.

Visitation will be held with the family Monday, Dec. 11, 2023 at 2 p.m. and a memorial service will follow at 3 p.m. at Sweet Haven Church, 424 Midway Road, Rockingham, NC 28379.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Toys for Tots or the Anson County Animal Shelter in Polkton in memory of Emma Carol Logan Linker.
