OBITUARY: Ernest C. Porter

Ernest C. Porter, 84, of Rockingham, passed away Sunday, Dec. 3, 2023 at Dahlia Gardens of Aberdeen.

He was born in Anson County, a son of the late T.Y. and LuElla Talley Porter.

He served honorably in the U.S. Army and was stationed at Fort Lewis Washington with the 43rd artillery battery. He worked 40 years in the building supplies industry. Ernest was a scoutmaster of Troop 297 for 12 years and under his leadership 16 boys received the rank of Eagle Scout. He was a member of Cameronian Presbyterian Church.

A funeral service will be conducted Thursday, Dec. 7, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home Chapel in Rockingham with the Rev. Phil Joins officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond Co. Memorial Park with military honors.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Treat Porter; and their children, Stephen Charles Porter and wife Kathy Stewart Porter, and Cheryle Ann Porter and fiancé Rafael Chaves; grandchildren, Katelyn Rose Warmuth Sandell and husband Joshua Sandell, Jerri Porter Allen and husband Spencer Allen, Stephen Porter II and fiancé Jedonna Griter, and Wanda Kimberly Boers Grant and husband Christopher Grant; great-grandchildren, Avalyn Sandell, Waelyn Grant and Wyatt Grant, Tucker Allen and Levi Allen.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Betty Lu Porter; and brothers, Jimmy Porter, Danny Porter and wife Nina (Sis) and John (Bill) William Porter and wife Margaret Ann McNair Porter.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023 from 5-7 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at his home.

In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Ernest Porter can be sent to the Lee McNeely Scholarship Fund at Cameronian Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 458 Rockingham, NC 28380.
