OBITUARY: Harold Worth High

HAMLET — Harold Worth High, 87, of Hamlet, passed away Friday, Dec. 16, 2022 surrounded by his loving family at Scotia Village in Laurinburg, North Carolina.

Along with his parents, he is also preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Bette K. Strickland High, who passed in 2008.

Harold was born July 24, 1935 to the late Bertha Caroline Gooden and Thomas Jefferson High.

He graduated from Clarkton High School in 1956 and served in the United States Army to honorably serve and protect his country. After serving his time in the Army, Harold then worked for CSX Railroad as a carman and foreman for 43 years.

He is survived by his children, Melinda High McKay (Don) of Raeford, North Carolina, Mary Caroline High and Dubby High (Beth), both of Rockingham, North Carolina. He is further survived by grandchildren Krystal McKay Sherman (Steven), Jenny McKay Secrist (Noah), Richard Worth High, Victoria Lynn Sachs (Ben) and Lilian Claire High; great-grandchildren Norah Jean Camphell, Tulla Secrist, Eli Sachs, Kye Sachs, Fox Secrist and Quinn Sherman. Harold is also survived by siblings Dorothy “Dot” Ballard of Wilmington, North Carolina, and James High (Kathleen) of Jacksonville, Florida.

A memorial service will be conducted Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2022 at 2 p.m., at First Baptist Church in Hamlet with Dr. Allison Farrah officiating. The family will receive friends for visitation an hour prior to the service. A private burial will be conducted at a later date.
