OBITUARY: Harry Gene and Barbara Cobler Richardson

ROCKINGHAM — Harry Gene Richardson Sr. and Barbara Cobler Richardson, both 76, of Rockingham, went home to be with their Lord just five days apart. Mr. Richardson passed away on Sunday, March 19, 2023 at Richmond County Hospice Haven and Mrs. Richardson joined him on Friday, March 24, 2023 at her home. They shared nearly 60 years together in marriage.

Mr. Richardson was born April 27, 1946 in Richmond County, son of the late Homer Lee Richardson Sr. and Ronie Cagle Richardson. Mrs. Richardson was born April 21, 1946 in Richmond County, daughter of the late James Aldy Cobler Sr. and Bessie Berton Cobler.

Mr. Richardson retired after more than 20years of service with Alpha Plastics, operational division of Georgia Pacific. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and in his childrens’ earlier years, would take them on trips to the mountains. Mr. Richardson was a family man. He was truly a family provider and his wife was the love of his life. He was the greatest example of a Dad and Granddad.

Mrs. Richardson enjoyed fishing with the family. She especially loved family time with the kids, grandkids, and great-grandkids. She opened their home to anyone in need. She never said goodbye, it was always, “I love ya, see ya.” They both were members of Place of Grace Campus, Rockingham.

The Richardsons were preceded in death by a daughter, Sandy Richardson; granddaughter, Jessica Richardson; and two great-grandchildren, Star Richardson and DJ Murphy.

Mr. Richardson was preceded in death by his parents, Homer Lee Richardson Sr. and Ronie Cagle Richardson; brothers, Edgar, Hurley, Bernie (Buck), Lewis (Dob), Larry and Jessie Richardson; and sisters, Bessie Smith, Dorothy Brown and Barbara Smith.

Mrs. Richardson was preceded in death by her parents, James Aldy Cobler Sr. and Bessie Berton Cobler; siblings, Bernice Bourgeois, Thomas Cobler, Jack Cobler, Charles Cobler, Bennie Hill, Nancy Hayes, Shirley Carlisle, James Aldy Cobler Jr., Jimmy Cobler and Jerry Cobler.

They are survived by daughters, Laurie Ann Barnhill (Ricky) of Mullins, South Carolina, and Cindy Richardson (George Haney) of Ansonville; sons, Barry Richardson (Kristy) of Rockingham, Harry Richardson Jr. (Gail) of Rockingham, and Gary Richardson (Debra) of Bennettsville, South Carolina; Mr. Richardson’s brother, Homer Lee Richardson Jr. of Columbia, South Carolina; Mrs. Richardson’s sister, Margeret Louise Bell of Georgia; 20 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.

Visitation for both Mr. and Mrs. Richardson will be Tuesday, March 28, 2023 from 6-8 p.m. at Place of Grace Campus, Rockingham.

The funeral service will be Wednesday, March 29, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Place of Grace Campus, with their sons, Pastor Gary Richardson and Harry Richardson Jr. officiating. Burial will be held privately.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to: Place of Grace, 252 School St., Rockingham, NC 28379.
