OBITUARY: Iris Hay Walters McDonald

Iris Hay Walters McDonald, 98, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2023 at the home of her daughter.

She was born in Richland County, South Carolina, on Oct. 22, 1924.

She was preceded in death by her parents Henry Fairley Hay and Willie Mae Rachels Hay; her spouse of 23 years, Robert H. Walters; her spouse of 24 years; J P McDonald, a sister Carolyn H. Bristow; and son-in law, Terry W. Gibson.

Iris is survived by one daughter, Jackie Walters Gibson; grandson, Robert W. Gibson (April), two great-grandsons, Michael and Wyatt and one step-great-granddaughter, Erin, all of Ocean Isle Beach; grandson Bradley W. Gibson (Holly) of Charlotte; step-granddaughter, Lori Anne Gibson Williams (James) and two step-great-granddaughters of Rockingham; two stepdaughters, Deloris M. Wilson and Sylvia M. Scott, and stepdaughter-in-law, Kathy B. McDonald, all of Denton; and numerous step-grandchildren, step-great-grandchildren and step-great-great-grandchildren.

Iris retired from Aleo Mg. Co. & Sandhurst Hosiery Plant in Rockingham. She was the oldest living member of Community Church at the time of her death. She was always a very active member of the Ladies’ Aid Society until her move to the beach. She was most famous for her pound cake which came to be known at church as “The Iris Pound Cake.” She loved gardening and working her garden with a tiller and freezing the vegetables which she grew.

A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, Feb. 18, 2023 at 2 p.m. at Community Church on Mill Road with Pastor Chris Thornton officiating. The visitation will be 1-2 p.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow at New Hope Methodist Church, U.S. 1 S, Marlboro County, South Carolina, in the Hay Family Cemetery.
