OBITUARY: James Calvin Hodges

ROCKINGHAM — James Calvin “J.C.” Hodges Sr., 89, of Rockingham, passed away Sunday, Jan. 29, 2023 at his home.

He was born Oct. 2, 1933 in Richmond County, son of the late James Bethea Hodges and Alma Smith Hodges.

Mr. Hodges worked for CSX Railroad as a conductor for more than 46 years. He was very involved in many areas throughout Richmond County, including coaching Bronco baseball for over 20 years. He was also the president of the Richmond County Booster Club for 10 years.

He was a faithful member of Rockingham Wesleyan Church, serving in several offices including Sunday school superintendent and vice chairman of the governing board. Being a devoted family man, he and his late wife were married for 70 years and were blessed with five children.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Hodges was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Stogner Hodges.

He is survived by his children, Yolanda Jean Hodges Williams of Rockingham, James Calvin Hodges Jr. (Emma) of Hamlet, Robbie Hodges (Anna) of Rockingham, Louis Hodges (Cathy) of Rockingham, and Chip Hodges (Kellie) of Oak Island; grandchildren, Josh Williams, Kristie Howard, Amy Yencho, Adam Hodges, Ian Withers, Robbie “Chad” Hodges Jr., Katie Hodges, Aaron Hodges, Jillian Sutton, Audrey Norton, Shirley Harris, Dylan Hodges, Brayden Hodges and Jaxon Hodges; 24 great-grandchildren; brother, Vernie Randall Hodges (Jean) of Dillsboro; and a special caregiver for both Mr. and Mrs. Hodges, Susan White.

Visitation will be Saturday, Feb. 4, 2023 from 11 a.m.-noon at Rockingham Wesleyan Church.

The funeral service will immediately follow visitation, at noon, with the Rev. Stanley Stogner and the Rev. Curtis Williams officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park.

At other times, the family will receive friends at the family home, Richmond Road Ext., Rockingham.
