Joyce Hewitt Elvis, 83, of Hamlet, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023 at Richmond County Hospice Haven.
She was born June 23, 1940, in Loris, South Carolina, daughter of the late Samuel and Pauline Campbell Hewitt.
With her love for children, Joyce was the founder and owner of Joyland Daycare in Hamlet for more than 20 years.
She loved her daycare children and their families for many years. She was a longtime member of The Church of God of Prophecy in Hamlet, serving in numerous capacities over the years. She enjoyed attending ladies retreats with some of her closest church friends and family. She was a true prayer warrior and spiritual leader. Joyce dearly loved her church and church family.
She, along with her husband Gordon, enjoyed life together for over 51 years. She loved her family and was a great example as a wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She will be greatly missed.
Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved son, Kenny Long; and sisters, Dorothy Hewitt Ingram, Barbara Jean Collins and Katrina Hewitt.
Joyce is survived by her loving husband, Gordon William Elvis of the home; children, Tim Long (Susan) of Bennettsville, South Carolina, Linda Elvis and Gordon Wayne Elvis, both of Hamlet; daughter-in-law, Lori Long of Rockingham; nine grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; brother, Phillip Hewitt of Fairmont; sisters, Mary Lou Smiley of Cowpens, South Carolina, Kathy Hewitt, Myra Kay Hewitt, and Diane Hilbourn, all of Fairmont; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, Sept. 14, 2023 from 11 a.m.-noon at The Church of God of Prophecy, Hamlet.
The funeral service will immediately follow the visitation, beginning at noon, with Bishop Steve Crews officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park.
