OBITUARY: Linda Welch Yates

Linda Welch Yates, 78, of Rockingham, passed away Dec. 7, 2023.

Linda was a daughter of R. Allan Welch and Hazel Hancock Welch, born on Nov. 20, 1945. Linda was born in Roanoke Rapids where their father was the mayor.

When it comes to describing the kind of person Linda was, there are simply not enough words to truly define and encapsulate her spirit. She was precious to all who had the privilege of knowing her. She was an elegant and graceful woman that had the strength of a warrior.

Her passion in life was teaching, and no one had a better lesson plan than Mrs. Linda Yates. In her career, she taught at Richmond Senior High School and Richmond Community College. When the prison had an adjunct program for rehabilitation, Mrs. Yates was one of the teachers that volunteered to make a difference in the lives of the local prison. Mrs. Yates was the kind of teacher that left such a lasting imprint on all her students. She had such a unique way of making connections with her students and her community.

Outside of work, Linda loved her children and grandchildren. She loved the holidays, and every Christmas season would go shopping with her girls. Linda left a mark on the hearts of so many people in her family and her community. Mrs. Yates will be missed dearly by every life she touched.

Mrs. Yates is survived by her three children, Amy Yates Bryan of Raleigh, Allan Yates of Granite Falls, and Susan Yates McDonald and husband Eddie of Rockingham; seven grandchildren, Sarah-Kathryn Yates Bryan, Wesley Yates, Adrian Yates, Ethan McDonald, Cooper McDonald, Carly McDonald and Kate McDonald; sisters, Nancy Crowe and Martha Allen and her husband Lea; and many nieces and nephews.

Along with her parents, Linda is preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Earl Wesley Yates.

A memorial service to celebrate the life of Mrs. Yates will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made out to Richmond County Hospice, at 1119 U.S. Hwy 1, Rockingham, NC 29379.
