OBITUARY: Mary Elizabeth Webb Hathcock

Mary Elizabeth “Libby” Webb Hathcock, 87, of Cartledge Creek Road, Rockingham, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, March 9, 2024 at Autumn Care Health & Rehab, Biscoe.

She was born Dec. 7, 1936 in Richmond County, daughter of the late John Platt Webb Sr. and Alma Diggs Webb.

Libby was a member of West Rockingham Methodist Church. She was a faithful member and a wonderful Christian lady who loved the Lord. One of her many contributions over the years to the community was going to nursing homes and providing goods to the residents. Libby, in her earlier years raising her sons, was also well-known by many neighborhood children as a second mother, providing meals and even taking them on beach trips. She was selfless and caring to many other children besides her own. Libby was also a die-hard Richmond Raiders fan and loved attending games on Friday nights. Her greatest accomplishments were being a mother and grandmother. She will be missed by all who knew and loved her.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, Elvin Eugene Monroe Sr., Melvin Gardner and Robert Hathcock; grandsons, Richard Wayne Monroe Jr. and Christopher Malcolm Monroe; brother, Harold Wayne Webb and wife Betty; and sisters, Betty Lou Arnette and husband Buck, and Ruth Richardson and husband Eddie.

Libby is survived by her sons, Elvin E. Monroe Jr. (Dean) and Richard Wayne Monroe (Janet), both of Ellerbe; stepson, Mel Gardner (Teresa) of Holly Springs; grandchildren, Travis Monroe (Brooke), Jeff Patrick (Nikki), Brian Patrick (Christy), Benjamin Monroe, Mary Monroe, Dusty Stewart and Holli Lane (Chris); great-grandchildren, Peyton, Preston, Jeremy, Benjamin, Timber, Gage and Taylee; brother, John Platt Webb Jr. (Martha) of Ellerbe; sister, Linda Davis (Martin) of Rockingham; and Rhonda Popowich, who was like her daughter.
