Mattie Jones Wheaton, our Mom, the last surviving child of Manley and Mattie Leviner Jones, died peacefully with family at her side on Oct. 29, 2023.
She was predeceased by her husband, David Grant Wheaton Sr.; her parents; five brothers and five sisters.
Mattie is survived by her children, David Wheaton Jr. (Sue) of North Carolina, John Wheaton of Kentucky, Edward Wheaton (Jill) of Illinois, Sandra Stoffel (Martin) of New York, and Duane Wheaton (Margaret) of Illinois; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, 15 great-great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and other family members; and multiple friends.
Mattie was a homemaker. She was born and raised in Rockingham and raised her family in Corning, New York. She loved all things involving family. She was an avid reader and crocheted blankets for many newborns. She had a tremendous belief in the Lord.
Visitation will be Friday, Nov. 3, 2023 from 1-2 p.m. at Maple Street Free Will Baptist Church in Rockingham.
The funeral service will begin at 2 p.m., with Pastor Darwin Cook officiating. Burial will follow at Pleasant Hill UMC Cemetery, Wallace, South Carolina.
