Peggy Ann Horne Hughes, passed away peacefully on Saturday, June 17, 2023 at the age of 82.
Peggy was born Dec. 4, 1940 in Richmond County, a daughter to the late Burt and Cora Cassidy Horne.
She was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother and friend to many. After working many years in the textile industry, she ended her working journey as a food service attendant at one of the local schools in Ellerbe. She was also a devoted member of the Oakboro Church Of God in Oakboro, before sickness struck her body and she was no longer able to attend.
Peggy is survived by her daughter, Cindy Sheppard Harrel of Ozark, Missouri; stepdaughters Joy Hughes Norton Horton of McColl, South Carolina and Cathy Allen of Rockingham; son, Jamie “James” Hughes and wife Julie of Mount Gilead; granddaughters, Angie, Jill, Tiffanie and Chantal; grandson, Steven; seven great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; sister, Doris White of Hamlet; and Dutchess, her special canine companion.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, James “Jimmy” Walter Hughes Jr.; stepdaughter Jean Carol Hughes and stepson James “Bubba” Walter Hughes III; brothers, Dock and Floyd Horne; and sisters, Bobbie McAston and Ruby Benoist.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 21, 2023 at the Carter Funeral Home Colonial Chapel with Pastor Torben Stroupe and Pastor Adam Hatley officiating.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, June 21, 2023 from 12:45–1:45 p.m. at Carter Funeral Home.
Interment will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made to the Stanly County Humane Society or Plant a Tree.
