OBITUARY: Peggy Robbins Long

Peggy Robbins Long, 91, of the Derby Community, passed away Friday, Jan. 19, 2024 at Scotia Village, Laurinburg.

She was born Oct. 10, 1932, in Richmond County, daughter of the late Marmaduke Robbins and Mamie Garner Robbins.

Peggy worked in the banking industry for more than 54 years. She began her career with Commercial State Bank in Hamlet, retiring after a long-tenured career as a teller with First Union. She enjoyed banking and loved people.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Hamlet and loved her church family. In prior years, she attended Jones Springs United Methodist Church. After retirement, Peggy took great pride in doing yard work — raking leaves and picking up pinecones. She also enjoyed baking cakes and being that she was raised on a farm, she spent countless hours shelling peas and beans. Being a kind, caring lady and having a caregiver’s heart, Peggy spent most of her life taking care of nursing everyone, including spending her vacation time caring for people. She was dearly loved by her family and will be greatly missed.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Lonnie Herbert Long Sr.; brothers, Sam Robbins and Larry Robbins; and sisters, Dot Rummage, Jean Lee and Mary Patterson.

Peggy is survived by her children, Brenda Bearden (Douglas Sr.) of Lexington, South Carolina, Lonnie Herbert “Herb” Long Jr. (Tresa) of Little River, South Carolina, and Jeff Long (Lori) of Rockingham; grandchildren, Douglas Bearden Jr. (Celena), Kary Todd Bearden, Britton Lindsay Bearden, Heather McCollim (Bill), Stephen Long, Sherrie Kindt (Dale), Brooke Billingsley (Travis) and Krista Hunter (William); 13 great-grandchildren; three great-great grandchildren; brother, Dr. Jack Robbins (Ginnie) of Angier; sister, Barbara Adams of Fayetteville; her dog, Buddy; and the family would like to thank her faithful, special caretaker Mayme Greer for the care she gave to their mother during her illness.
