OBITUARY: Richard Lee Jones

HAMLET — Richard Lee Jones, 75, of Hamlet, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, Jan. 25, 2023 at his residence.

He was born Dec. 12, 1947, in Richmond County, son of the late Randolph Donnie Jones and Rosa Lee Cribb Jones.

Richard worked in several areas with Lowe’s Home Improvement as department manager prior to retirement. He was a member of Mount Carmel Free Will Baptist Church in Rockingham. He was full of life, humorous and the life of the party. Gardening was one of his favorite hobbies.

He was a family man — a wonderful husband, great father, and an amazing Papa to his grandbabies. The evening of his passing, he wanted to attend church “one more time” and so he did, along with his wife. Shortly after returning home, he was greeted into heaven by his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Richard was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Jerry Jones; and nieces, Christy Jones and Angela Jones.

He is survived by his loving wife, Tammy Lynn Smith Jones, of the home; children, Jennifer Darnell of Ellerbe, Patrick Lee (Ciera) of Rockingham, Randy Coates of Pennsylvania, Valerie Butler (Anthony) of Lumberton, and Shawn Jones of Rockingham; brothers, Mike Jones (Trudy) of Cordova, Tim Jones (Kathy) of Sanford, and J.D. Jones (Shirley) of Cordova; grandchildren, Nicholas Lee, Dixie Lee, McKenzie Wilson, Dawson Wilson, and Christopher Jones; great-grandchild, Conner Chavis; and in-laws, Dennis and Barbara Smith.
