OBITUARY: Roger Wilson Hancock

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Roger Wilson Hancock, 67, of Jacksonville, Florida, formerly of Rockingham, passed away Feb. 1, 2023 at his home surrounded by his family.

Roger was born in Richmond County on Nov. 15, 1955, son of the late James and Jewell Hancock of Rockingham.

Roger graduated from Richmond Senior High School in 1974, and joined the U.S. Navy shortly afterwards. Roger performed many jobs in the Navy. He started off by working on fighter jets, later as a mechanic and crew chief on Sea Hawk helicopters, then finished his career as an instructor on turbine engines. Roger served his country proudly until he retired in 1999. Upon retirement from the Navy, he started a career with Anheuser-Busch in Jacksonville, Florida, and worked with them until he retired again in 2020.

Roger loved his grandchildren as they were a big part of his life. He loved following his Jacksonville Jaguars, going to estate sales, and was a huge NASCAR fan. When he had time, you would find him out riding his Harley-Davidson or twisting wrenches on it.

Roger was married for 40 years to the love of his life, Lannie Hancock of Rockingham. They had two daughters, Eva Odom-Galler (Roger) and Jamie Hancock. There are three grandchildren, Roger Galler II, Elianya Galler and Banphrionsa Jewell Ann Galler. Left to cherish his memories are brothers Jimmy Hancock (Teresa) and Allen Hancock (Leeanna).

The family will receive family and friends Friday, Feb. 10, 2023 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Watson-King Funeral Home in Rockingham, North Carolina. Funeral services will follow at 1:30 with the Rev. Michael Griffin officiating. Burial will follow at Richmond Co. Memorial Park with military honors.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made out to Richmond County Hospice Haven, 1119 North U.S. Highway 1, Rockingham, North Carolina 28379.
