OBITUARY: Ronnie Joe Chavis

SOUTHPORT — Ronnie Joe Chavis, 68, of Southport, formerly of Rockingham, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 22, 2022 at the home of his daughter, Sharon.

He was born in Fort Smith, Arkansas, March 22, 1954, son of the late Billy Ray Chavis and Bernice Poole Chavis.

Ronnie worked previously as a heavy equipment operator in road construction. He enjoyed listening to old country music and watching westerns. He liked to do things his way, and if he thought it, he said it. He loved his family, including his children and grandchildren, and especially his mother who he cared for over 20 years. His daughter, Sharon, was the center of his life.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy Jay Chavis and Bernice Poole Chavis; and a brother, Jeff Chavis.

Ronnie is survived by his daughter, Sharon Hodges (Chad) of Rockingham; sons, Parrish Stegall-Chavis of Indian Trail and Ronnie Chavis Jr. (Amiee) of Randleman; grandchildren, Austin Moore, Ashton Moore, Kylie Chavis, and Cameron Hodges; one great-grandchild due in March 2023; brothers, Jerry Chavis (Annette), Gary Chavis, and Pete Chavis (Glenda), all of Rockingham; sister, Sheila Ramos-Chavis (Robert) of Rockingham; and best buddies, Carl Ward and Mike Starling.

Visitation will be Saturday, Nov. 26, 2022 from 12:45-1:45 p.m. at Abundant Life Church. The funeral will follow the visitation at 2 p.m. with Pastor Joe Wilkes officiating. Burial will follow at Eastside Cemetery.

The family wishes to thank his nurse, Natalie, for the care given to Mr. Chavis.
