HAMLET — Ruth Grant Martin, 85, of Hamlet, passed away Sunday, March 5, 2023 at Richmond County Hospice Haven.
She was born Aug. 9, 1937, in Marlboro County, South Carolina, daughter of the late Malon Grant and Mary Maness Grant.
Ruth worked as a certified nursing assistant for many years in healthcare. She was an excellent cook and enjoyed baking. There wasn’t anything she wouldn’t do for anyone in need. Ruth loved everyone and was known as the “Lady with the big heart.” She especially loved her family and was known to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren lovingly as “GG.”
She was preceded in death by her parents, Malon and Mary Maness Grant; husband, Claude Martin; and all of her siblings, Lloyd Grant Sr., Lacy Grant, Ruby Grant Steen, Thelma Shirah and Rachel Turner.
Ruth is survived by her children, Kimberly Brigman (John) of Hamlet, Steve Martin of Hamlet, Gary Martin (Audrey) of Rockingham, and Dean Martin (Crystal) of Rockingham; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren (and a girl due in July); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 9, 2023 from 2-3 p.m. at Joy Free Will Baptist Church.
The funeral service will begin immediately following the visitation at 3 p.m. with Pastor June Grant officiating. The burial will follow at Grant-Steen Cemetery in Bennettsville, South Carolina.
At other times, the family will receive friends at her daughters’ home, 111 Bauersfeld St., Hamlet.
