OBITUARY: Samuel Keith Whitley

Samuel “Keith” Whitley, 58, of Rockingham, passed away Sunday, Dec. 17, 2023 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond.

He was born Nov. 3, 1965 in Richmond County, son of Sammy L. Whitley and the late Mary Hinson Whitley.

Keith worked in construction as a general contractor, starting with his father in the business with Sammy Whitley Construction. He later owned his own company, Keith Whitley Construction and was a partner with Principle Builders.

He was a very humble, non-judging, compassionate young man. Keith never met a stranger and would talk to everyone. He loved people and was a God-loving person. His personality was to always be kind and considerate of others. Keith also had a love for sports, especially football, and was a great athlete himself. Fishing, hunting and NASCAR were other hobbies that he enjoyed. His greatest love was his family. Keith loved his mother and found love in his children and his grandchildren. He will be missed by everyone that knew and loved him.

Keith was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Hinson Whitley.

He is survived by his children, Lauren Benton of Rockingham, Dustin Whitley and Payton Whitley, both of Wilmington; his father, Sammy L. Whitley, and wife Gail, of Rockingham; grandchildren, Mylie McCormick, Brooklyn Whitley and Jett Whitley; sister, Sherry Byrd, and husband Johnny, of Rockingham; niece and nephew, Whitney Franco (Adam) and Kyle Byrd (Brittani); and several aunts, uncles, cousins, great-nieces and nephews, and extended family.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, Dec. 21, 2023 from 1-2 p.m. at the Rockingham Church of God of Prophecy, 139 Flowers St. The funeral will immediately follow the visitation, beginning at 2 p.m. at the church. Entombment will follow at Richmond County Memorial Park Mausoleum.
