OBITUARY: Shelby Jean Davis Farris

Shelby Jean Davis Farris, 87, of Hamlet, passed away Thursday, June 6, 2024 at Haven Hospice in Gainesville, Florida.

She was born July 8, 1936, in Hamlet, daughter of the late Lonnie Everett Davis and Susan Mable Terry Davis.

Shelby worked as a furniture builder, upholsterer and inspector in the furniture industry. She loved doing crossword puzzles, shopping, yard sales, and camping. She was also an avid NASCAR fan. To her family, she was affectionately known as “Granny.”

Throughout her life she was known as many things: a daughter, sister, wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister-in-law, and aunt. But to many she was the Mom that chose to be. The Mom that chose to be is a woman full of love and care. The Mom that chose to be is a woman full of guidance and wisdom. The Mom that chose to be is a woman full of discipline and whatfores. The Mom that chose to be has had a hand in raising many, rather they be her own child or children of others.

For some, the Mom that chose to be was there to provide support whenever needed. For others, the Mom that chose to be brought them into her home and raised them as her own. Although the situations and circumstances may have been different, to the Mom that chose to be, they were all her children. As the children aged and went their own way or stayed, the love from the Mom that chose to be never changed.

Along with her parents, Shelby was preceded in death by her husband, Jimmie “Jim” Farris; daughter, Angela Jo-Ann Carter; brother, J.W. Davis; and sisters, Francis Ransom, Mary Hudson and Janie Snipes.
