OBITUARY: Sidney Carlyle Hodges

HAMLET — Sidney Carlyle Hodges, 70, of Hamlet, North Carolina, passed away Wednesday evening, May 17, 2023.

Sidney was the son of the late Carl Hodges and Evelyn Roscoe Garner Hodges Monroe.

He was born in Hamlet Dec. 21, 1952.

Along with his parents, Sidney is predeceased by his siblings, J.C. Garner, William Carroll “Dump” Garner and Phyllis Hodges Willoughby.

Sidney grew up in Hamlet and was a graduate of the late Hamlet High School. After high school, he would further his academic career by obtaining an associate degree in business. Sidney would go on to work for the railroad for many years as a clerk and union representative.

After the railroad, Sidney would open up his own pawn shop on Aug. 8, 1988. Sidney loved being the owner of his pawn shop, it was his pride and joy. Sidney was a very hardworking and kind person.

Outside of work, he loved helping people and giving others advice when he could. In his youth, Sidney enjoyed body building and fitness. He won several amateur competitions and took immense pride in his accomplishments. Sidney was always willing to help and coach people in the gym if they needed it.

Sidney loved many things in life. He loved his pawn shop, he loved beach and Motown music, and he especially loved his family. Sidney can be described as a humorous man that loved to tell a good story. Sidney was a proud supporter of the armed forces as his father was a highly decorated Seabee and his two sons, Heath and Luke, all served in the military. Sidney was a man that many loved, and he will surely be missed.

Sidney leaves behind his wife of 34 years, Pamela Pope Hodges, of the home; children, Justin Heath Hodges of Hamlet, Serenity Mae “Tate” Hodges of Hamlet, Dalton Luke Hodges (Madison) of Durham; a special niece who was like a daughter, Ann Willoughby Miller (Wade) of Charlotte; Tommy “Buddy” Nunley, who Sidney was a mentor to; mother and father-in-law Jackie and Tate Pope of Clinton; granddaughters, Evelyn Elizabeth Hodges, Julia Grace Hodges and Gracelyn Mae Hodges. Sidney also leaves behind many lifelong friends, all of whom will miss him dearly.

A memorial service will be held in Sidney’s honor Sunday, May 21, 2023 at Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet, North Carolina. Visitation will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. prior to the service. The Rev. Alex Perakis and the Rev. Marvin Taylor will be officiating the service.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested memorial donations be made out to the Wounded Warrior Project, P.O. Box 758516, Topeka, Kansas 66675-8516.
