OBITUARY: Tammy Watkins Mainwaring

Tammy Watkins Mainwaring, 57, of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away at her home on Saturday, May 18, 2024, following a courageous battle with cancer.

Tammy was born on Aug. 22, 1966, to Jerry and Barbara Watkins in Rockingham.

She graduated from Richmond Senior High School in 1984, where she was a member of the Marching Raider Band and softball team. While growing up, she was a dedicated member of Pine Grove Baptist Church and was actively involved in a variety of youth ministries.

After graduating from high school, she attended the University of North Carolina at Pembroke and graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree with honors followed by a Master of Arts Degree in Education. Tammy soon accepted her first job as a teacher and coach in the Chesterfield County, South Carolina school district. With a passion for helping her students and a keen interest in technology, she would travel to Australia and pursue a second Master’s degree in Information Technology Management at Wollongong University.

While studying in Australia, Tammy met the love of her life, Glenn. They were soon married, and following graduation they decided to return to the United States to continue their careers.

Tammy’s accomplished career in technology management included work at the S.C. Department of Public Instruction, the South Carolina University System and state legislature, S.C. Budget Control Board, Blue Cross Blue Shield of South Carolina Information Systems and most recently, she served as the president and CFO of IT-oLogy, an ed-tech company committed to growing IT talent in South Carolina. She received numerous awards and accolades and was recognized in her field on an international level.

Tammy was an avid tennis player, loved traveling and spending time with family and friends. She worked diligently training her Australian shepard and sidekick, Ozzie.

Tammy is survived by her husband, Glenn David Mainwaring; parents, Jerry and Barbara Watkins; mother and father-in-Law, David and Margaret Mainwaring; brothers, Rick Watkins (Cindy) and Ronnie Watkins (Teri Jo); sister-in-law, Sharon Mainwaring; three nieces, six nephews and four great-nieces and -nephews.

Services will be held at Pine Grove Baptist Church on Wednesday, May 22, 2024, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to:
