OBITUARY: Verla Mae Robinson Steen

Verla Mae “Sister” Robinson Steen, 84, of Bennettsville, South Carolina, passed away at her home on Thursday, Oct. 26, 2023 surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Dec. 12, 1938, in Marlboro County, South Carolina, daughter of the late Johnny Robinson and Viola Robinson.

Sister, as she was affectionately known, worked for several years with Imperial Foods in Hamlet, prior to her husband’s and mother’s declining health, in which she was caregiver to both. She was a faithful member of Sandhills Wesleyan Church in Bennettsville, loved attending church and loved her church family.

She was an outdoors lady, enjoying gardening and flowers. Sister loved eating fried fish and looked forward to getting together with family. Not only did she dearly love her family, but she also raised numerous other children like her own. Her dogs, Daisy, Cash and Hercules were her babies. Sister is going to be missed by all that knew and loved her.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Steen; brothers, Robert Robinson, Juley Robinson and Lee Robinson.

Sister is survived by her children, Janice Willett (Bruce) of Hamlet, Verna Bullard of Bennettsville, Pete Steen of Bennettsville and James Steen (Mary) of Fayetteville; grandchildren, Phillip Steen, Elijah Steen, April Bullard (Charlie Jenkins), Christie Cummings (Tommy) and Kimberly Pruitt; 12 great-grandchildren, and six great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Roy Robinson of Hamlet and Bo Robinson of Southern Pines; sisters, Betty Turner of Mississippi and Earlene Reese (J.C.) of Rockingham; and a number of nieces, nephews and extended family.

Visitation will be Monday, Oct. 30, 2023 from 6-8 p.m. at Sandhills Wesleyan Church, Highway 38 N., Bennettsville.

The funeral will be Tuesday, Oct. 31, 2023 at 1 p.m. at Sandhills Wesleyan Church with Pastor Dennis Smith and Pastor Jamie English officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.

At other times, the family will receive guests at the home of her daughter, Janice, McDonald Avenue, Hamlet.
