OBITUARY: Wawokiya Ursula Lawrence

Wawokiya Ursula Lawrence, 71, of Hamlet, passed away Sunday, Oct. 15, 2023.

Wawokiya was a daughter of the late Hugh Brewer Jr. and Pearl Elenore Brewer.

Along with her parents, Wawokiya is preceded in death by her sister, Julie Fogelman; and a son, Michael Lawrence.

Wawokiya served in the United States Air Force back in the ’70s. Predominantly, she was a homemaker and took immense pride in raising her children. Later in life, Wawokiya would go on to obtain her master’s degree in education and teach for several years.

Outside of work, Wawokiya was a creative woman that loved to craft and write poetry. She enjoyed reading novels and solving challenging puzzles. Wawokiya was an adventurous woman that loved to get in the car with her daughter Johanna and go wherever the road would take her. Above all, Wawokiya loved her family with all her heart.

Wawokiya is survived by her children Johanna Newton (Seth), of Hamlet, North Carolina, and Robert Lawrence (Jill) of New Mexico; brother, Hugh “Hughie” Brewer III of South Carolina; stepsister, Mary Ellen Cox (Bobby) of Carthage, North Carolina; and grandchildren, Silas Newton and Madelynn Newton, also of Hamlet.

The family will receive friends for visitation from 1 to 2 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 30, 2023. Funeral services will follow and be held at Watson-King Funeral Home in Hamlet with Deacon Juan Alexander Vincent Martinez officiating. She will be committed privately thereafter.

In addition to flowers, the family has requested that memorial donations be made out to the National Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 676910 Dallas, TX 75267-6910. The family requested this organization to honor Wawokiya’s late sister Julie as well as her own fight against breast cancer.
