OBIUTARY: Edith Horne Cooke Lambert

CORDOVA — Edith Horne Cooke Lambert, 95, of Cordova, North Carolina, went to be with her Lord and Savior Monday, March 27, 2023.

Edith was a daughter of the late Eggbert Aileen “Ed” Horne and Margaret Ann “Maggie” Sweatt. She was born on July 10, 1927 in Richmond County.

Edith was raised in Richmond County and loved her friends and family deeply. She is a graduate of the former Rockingham High School. After high school, Edith would go on to manage Regal and Royal Plaza for four years as assistant manager. For several years after, she worked in textiles.

In 1955, Edith and her first husband, William Robert “Pete” Cooke, owned and operated the widely known “Cooke Construction.” Outside of work, Edith was a caring and loving woman to her family, community and even to strangers. She never knew a stranger. Edith made it a point to get to know anyone and everyone she had a conversation with. She was a crafty woman, to include crocheting, cross-stitching and knitting. Edith was a caregiver to any who needed one and she loved her family with all her heart.

Along with her parents, Edith is preceded in death by her first and second husbands, William Robert “Pete” Cooke and Carthell William “Bill” Lambert, respectively; siblings, Aileen Rhyn, Carolyn McKay, Less Horne; daughter-in-law Donna Stubbs; grandchild, Scott Cooke; and great-grandchild, Jody Williams.

Edith is survived by her children, Gary Cooke of Seaside, North Carolina, Steve Cooke (Linda) of Richmond Hills, Georgia, Lisa Cooke of Rockingham; grandchildren, Amy Williams (Jeff), who Edith raised as her own, of Rockingham, Andy Sanders of Rockingham, Miranda Sanders of Rockingham, Paul Cooke of Marietta, Georgia, David Cooke (Megan) of Springville, Georgia; great-grandchildren, Anna, Chandler, Jordyn, Gracie, Keira, Gavin, Brianna, Daren and Madison.

To honor Edith and her wishes, there will not be a memorial service conducted. A private burial for family will be held at a later date at Richmond County Memorial Park Cemetery. Edith will be buried next to her parents and late husband, Bill.
