Virginia Roscoe McDuffie

HAMLET — Mrs. Virginia Roscoe McDuffie departed her earthly journey Jan. 1, 2022 after a long and courageous battle with cancer at the home of her daughter.

She was born on Oct. 19, 1936 in Hamlet to Earl J. Roscoe and Ethel J. Roscoe. She was the oldest of six children.

She graduated from Hamlet High School in 1955.  One of her greatest attributes was her love for her family and church. She was affectionately known as Virginia, Gin, Aunt Virginia, Aunt Gina, Sis, Momma, and Maw Maw.  She loved each of these titles and was a blessing in each of these roles.

She possessed a strong work ethic and retired from Richmond Community College in January 2007 after 33 years of faithful service; and retired also from FirstHealth Richmond Campus in October 2019 after 35 years of devoted service.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her son, James Michael McDuffie; her granddaughter, Kelli Marie Burgess; a sister, Ann R. Bundy; and her brothers, Ed Roscoe, Jimmy Roscoe and Leonard Roscoe.

Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Henry R. McDuffie, and her daughter, Joan M. Monroe (Bill) of Hamlet, and daughter-in-law, Kathy M. Sanborn (Bruce) of Rockwell. She is survived, too, by her grandchildren, Josh McDuffie (Jessica) of Clemmons, Brittany M. Chavis (Jared) of New London, Seth Burgess (Candace) of Wilmington, Kaytlin Short (Hunter) of McColl, South Carolina. She is survived also by her great-grandchildren, Jaelyn Marie Monroe, Addison Joy Monroe, Brooks Michael McDuffie, Hank Harrison Chavis, Acen Riggs Burgess, Campbell James Chavis, Harper Ryan Tidd, Hope Riggan Burgess, Collins Quinn Chavis, and baby boy “Short,” arriving in April of 2022.
