Wayne Leviner

HAMLET — Wayne Ellis Leviner, 72, passed away at his home Thursday, Sept. 12, 2019, followed by a period of declining health.

He was born in Richmond County on April 14, 1947, a son of the late Gene and Lexie Leviner. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Heidi Pope and Wendy Lampley.

He was a Vietnam veteran, having served his country in the U.S. Navy. He had a career as a master tool and dye maker and worked for 21 years with Owens-Illinois Corporation. He enjoyed fishing, hunting and riding his motorcycle with his dog companion, “Muffy,” who rode many miles with him. He was a member of Highland Pines Free Will Baptist Church.

“Uncle Wayne,” as he was known by many family and friends, is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Shelby Jean Bowman Leviner; three children, Tommy Leviner, Troy Leviner (Tammy) and Tracy Ledwell (David), all of Hamlet; six grandchildren, Cassidy, Dalton and Andria Leviner, Kandler Kempton (Aaron), Hunter and Payton Ledwell; three great-grandchildren: Carter Harden, Hadley Rose Anderson and Raelynn Kempton, plus “Baby Kempton” on the way. Also surviving is one brother, Craig Leviner, and four sisters, Rachel Little (Mark), Wanda Heintz, Reba Taylor (Alex) and Roxanne Benoist (David).

The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Saturday at Carter Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Highland Pines FWB Church, officiated by the Rev. Teddy Rabon. Interment with military honors will follow in the Northam Cemetery.
