William Andrew Penuel

ROCKINGHAM — William Andrew “Bill” Penuel Sr, of Rockingham, passed away peacefully on Friday, Nov. 5 at Hospice Haven in Rockingham.

He was born Oct. 3, 1932, son of the late William R. and Thelma P. Penuel. After graduating from East Carolina University, he joined the U.S. Navy, and upon discharge, worked in the North Carolina school system as a teacher and administrator.

In later years, he was self-employed. He was a longtime member of First Presbyterian Church of Rockingham where he taught Sunday school and was a deacon. He enjoyed woodworking, could fix anything, and was a master storyteller.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard Penuel.

Bill is survived by his wife of 54 years, Linda Hartgrove Penuel, of the home. Also surviving are his sons, William Andrew Penuel Jr and wife Lauren of Northport, Alabama; Christopher Thomas Penuel, and wife Paulette of Taylors, South Carolina; grandchildren, Makenna and Nathan Penuel of Taylors, South Carolina, and Carter and Grayson Penuel of Northport, Alabama. Also surviving is his faithful furry companion, Jacob, of the home.

A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 21, 2021 at First Presbyterian Church in Rockingham. The family will receive friends following the service at the church.
