William Stacy Weeks

ROCKINGHAM — William Stacy “Billy” Weeks, who for the last eight years had distinguished himself as the operations manager at Rockingham Dragway, died unexpectedly Saturday, Feb. 19, while attending a drag racing trade show in Greensboro. He was 54.

A graduate of Richmond High School and Fayetteville Technical Institute, Weeks was hired by Rockingham Dragway owner Steve Earwood in September of 2013 to oversee the day-to-day operation of one of the nation’s most active dragstrips. Later, he also assumed responsibility for sales and distribution at Rock Racing Batteries, another Earwood-owned company.

“Billy was ‘The Rock’s’ rock,” Earwood said. “He was a friend to all the racers, manufacturers, vendors and fans; the go-to guy whenever you had a problem. He truly loved his job and his loss will be difficult for all of us to overcome. Our prayers are with his family, especially his mother (Libby Reynolds of Rockingham) and his girlfriend, Brenda Bowers.”

Weeks and Bowers were attending the Shriners Drag Racing and Hot Rod Expo at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex as Rockingham Dragway’s official representatives when he became ill following dinner on Friday. He reportedly was unresponsive when she tried to awaken him Saturday morning.
