ROCKINGHAM — William Thomas Smith, 72, of Rockingham, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 16, 2021 at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital.
He was born Feb. 3, 1949 in Richmond County, a son of the late Gene A. and Eva Mae Grooms Smith.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Billie Jo Smith Haire; and a brother, Kenneth Gene Smith.
Mr. Smith retired from CSX Railroad and was a proud veteran of the Untied States Armed Forces. William was very loving and devoted to his family and friends.
A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2021 at Pleasant Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery with Bishop Marvin Taylor officiating. Please wear a mask and continue social distancing.
Surviving, his wife of 54 years, Mattie D. Smith; daughters, Ellen M. Smith and Christie T. Nichols (William T. Nichols); sisters, Cathy Godwin, Mary Jane Heaton (JR Heaton), and Priscilla Teal; grandchildren, Kimberly Haire, Curtis Haire (Rebakah Haire) and Steven Knight; great-grandchildren, Brycen Haire, Kairi Bower, Joanna Haire and Charlotte Haire.
