A LOOK BACK AT 2020: Businesses open, expand and close in Richmond County

J.C. Penney closed its Rockingham location this year, but officials with C.F. Smith Property Group announced this week that Burkes Outlet would be filling part of that space.

ROCKINGHAM — Despite the challenges in 2020, Richmond County saw the startup of several businesses and the expansion of others.

Burkes Outlet coming to Richmond Plaza

The former J.C. Penny property will occupy Burkes Outlet and Hibbett sports this coming spring, according to C.F. Smith Property Group.

ROCKINGHAM — A new store is coming to Richmond Plaza to fill part of the vacant property left by the recent closing of J.C. Penney.

Rockingham J.C. Penney one of 5 N.C. stores to close

The Rockingham J.C. Penney store is one of five being closed in North Carolina after the company filed for bankruptcy.

ROCKINGHAM — Richmond Plaza will soon be losing a large tenant.

J.C. Penney announced Thursday the Rockingham location would be one of the 154 stores closing as part of a “store optimization strategy” after filing for bankruptcy protection last month, according to Market Watch.
