Family members and lawmakers, in Washington, D.C., and Raleigh, representing N.C. residents are mourning the deaths of a Marine and soldier who died in a terrorist attack while helping Americans and others evacuate from Afghanistan. Thirteen service members, including a Fort Bragg soldier and Camp Lejuene Marine, died while supporting Operation Freedom’s Sentinel, the Department of Defense announced Saturday, Aug. 28.

ASHEBORO — Diesel, a California sea lion, who one zookeeper remembered as a "chatty goofball full of energy," passed away on Aug. 18. Diesel arrived at the Zoo in 2015 with another sea lion pup named Owen after both were deemed unfit to be returned to the wild.

ROCKINGHAM — Dan McCready won’t be the only retired Marine running for the 9th Congressional District, as former Mecklenberg County Commissioner Matthew Ridenhour— saying "It takes a Marine to beat a Marine — announced in a press release Wednesday that he was jumping in the race, bringing the field of GOP candidates to five for the special election.
