ROCKINGHAM — A man wanted in an out-of-state homicide was taken into custody at a local home on Tuesday.
According to the Rockingham Police Department, officers received an anonymous tip that 30-year-old Kwante Jamal Betters — a suspect in a Baltimore, Maryland murder — was in a home near the intersection of Leak and Hood streets.
The RPD Tactical Response Unit and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office’s Special Response Team responded and police say that, after a brief negotiation, Betters came out of the home and was taken into custody without incident.
The RO reached out to the Baltimore Police Department for more information on the case but received no response as of 5 p.m. Wednesday.
Betters is currently being held without bond in the Richmond County Jail, awaiting extradition. He is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 12.
Online Maryland court records show Betters was convicted in 2014 of malicious destruction of property and possession of a regulated firearm being under 21.
In 2016, Betters was convicted on two counts of possession of a controlled dangerous substance with intent to distribute, and in 2019 on a single felony count of theft.
All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
