COLUMN: Honoring our fallen soldiers

The meaning of Memorial Day is "remembrance:” a day to honor our fallen soldiers who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

On Memorial Day, the media do their usual sacralizing of war. Instead, it should be a day for the ritualized scourging of politicians. During the last 70 years, their lies have resulted in the unnecessary deaths of almost 100,000 American soldiers and millions of foreigners. And yet, people still get teary-eyed when politicians take the stage to talk about their devotion to the troops.

ROCKINGHAM — For more than 30 years, motorcycle riders from across the nation have descended on the nation’s capital on Memorial Day weekend for Rolling Thunder to bring awareness of those in the military who were declared prisoners of war or missing in action.

One Richmond County veteran, teacher and photographer has participated in the event twice, including this past weekend.

COLUMN: All gave some, some gave all

A bullet pinged past the soldier’s ear as he crouched behind bushes near the front lines. A soldier near him suddenly lurched forward, letting out a horrible scream as he crumpled to the ground and died. All gave some, some gave all.
