RALEIGH — A Superior Court judge has rejected Lt. Gov. Dan Forest’s attempt to throw out some of Gov. Roy Cooper’s executive orders linked to COVID-19. But the same judge is allowing the case to move forward.

ROCKINGHAM — Courtroom B of the Richmond County Judicial Center was standing-room only Wednesday afternoon, but the occasion wasn’t a high-profile murder case.

Instead, Dawn Layton, who used to prosecute murder cases, was ceremonially sworn in as a superior court judge.

ROCKINGHAM — Assistant District Attorney Dawn Layton is moving to the other side of the bench.

ROCKINGHAM — North Carolina Superior Court Judge Tanya Wallace has served in the field of law for quite some time, and come Aug. 1, that field will be down one less professional.

Wallace announced Thursday morning that she will be officially retiring, effective July 31.

RALEIGH — Gov. Roy Cooper has reconfigured the N.C. Court of Appeals into an 8-7 Democratic majority with his latest two appointments.

ROCKINGHAM — With family members by his side, Stephan Futrell made the transition from attorney to superior court judge Tuesday afternoon.

Futrell, who was recently appointed to the judicial position by Gov. Roy Cooper, took his oath of office in the Richmond County Judicial Center in front of a crowd of past and present legislators, judges and members of the legal community, with Superior Court Judge Tanya Wallace presiding over the swearing-in ceremony.

ROCKINGHAM — One Richmond County lawyer will soon be donning a black robe and wielding a gavel.

Longtime attorney Stephan B. Futrell was recently appointed to the bench last week by Gov. Roy Cooper to fill the spot soon to be vacated by Superior Court Judge Richard Brown.
