Committee announces events to honor MLK in Richmond County

ROCKINGHAM — The Richmond County Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Foundation Committee has four days of events scheduled this year to honor the fallen civil rights hero using the theme “Unity: Yes We Can!”

The commemorations kick off at Liberty Place in downtown Rockingham with the annual MLK Gala at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18.

Three events are spread throughout the following day: a 9 a.m. prayer breakfast at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital-Richmond; the annual commemorative parade/march at noon; and a youth extravaganza at 7 p.m., held at the Leak Street Educational and Cultural Center.

Parade participants are asked to line up at 11 a.m. at Leath Memorial Library. The route will travel down East Washington Street and loop around to the Richmond County Courthouse for a brief program.

Host pastor the Rev. John Jackson of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church welcomes guest speaker the Rev. Butch Farrah, pastor of Roberdell United Methodist Church, for an ecumenical service Sunday, Jan. 20 at 5 p.m.

Music for the service will be provided by the MLK/J.C. Watkins Choir, directed by Dr. Brooksie Harrington of Fayetteville.

On Monday, Jan. 21, the Rev. Dian Davis, pastor of Mount Zion United Church of Christ, will be the speaker for a noon luncheon at Sidney Grove Agape Center.

In addition to being a pastor, Davis is a life coach and justice advocate, serving five years under the leadership of the Rev. William Barber, former president of the state chapter of the NAACP.
