OPINION: Corporate handouts are not capitalism

Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos are two of the richest men in the world, and while both are clearly brilliant titans of industry, neither of them achieved that status without multiple handouts from the government. Musk’s Tesla and SpaceX have received nearly $5 billion in government aid over the years in various forms — grants, environmental credits, tax breaks, discounted loans, and more — while Amazon received more than $3.7 billion in taxpayer subsidies at the federal level alone.

RALEIGH — Gov. Roy Cooper has promised $445 million state tax dollars to corporations so far in 2020. At the same time, he’s kept a large swath of North Carolina’s small businesses closed under his COVID-19 orders.

COLUMN: State shouldn't play favorites

With hundreds of thousands of North Carolinians out of work and millions fearful about their futures, state and local policymakers are about to encounter a parade of companies, industries, and special-interest groups asking for targeted tax breaks and other handouts.
