Filing ends for Richmond County municipal elections

ROCKINGHAM — The remaining members of Hoffman’s Town Council made the election filing deadline and another candidate has entered the Rockingham City Council race.

According to records with the Richmond County Board of Elections, Hoffman Mayor Tommy Hart council members Daniel Kelly and Cynthia Northcutt filed for re-election on Thursday and John Taylor followed suit on Friday before the period ended at noon.

Rory Jones and Riccardo (Ricky) Anderson both filed July 12.

Down in the county seat, Camerine Wright-Hairston threw her proverbial hat in the ring for a shot at the Rockingham City Council.

Although her legal name is spelled “Camerine,” she will have it listed as “Cameron” on the ballot.

Wright-Hairston is one of five candidates to file for three council seats, currently held by John Hutchinson, Anne Edwards and Bennett Deane, who all filed. John W. Carter also filed for the council.

Mayor Steve Morris is also up for re-election but is not being challenged, nor is Hamlet Mayor Bill Bayless.

There are also three seats up on the Hamlet City Council with five candidates vying for a spot.

The seats are currently held by Wendy Massagee, Joe Robinson and Maurice Stuart.

Robinson and Stuart, who were both appointed this year to fill out the remainder of the terms after two council members resigned, have both filed, but Massagee, who only served one term, announced last week that she would not run again.

Carl Andre Jones, Oscar Sellers and former Hamlet Police Chief Terry Moore have also filed.

Ellerbe Councilman Fred Cloninger was the only candidate to file for mayor, after Lee Berry said he wouldn’t seek re-election.

If/when Cloninger becomes mayor, the council will have to appoint someone to fill out the rest of his term, according to Elections Director Connie Kelly.

Two seats on the town’s council, currently held by Elsie Freeman and Jeremy McKenzie, were also up for grabs. Aside from the two incumbents, Joe Grooms also entered the race.

While Norman’s mayoral race will feature two candidates, Tonia Collins and Adrian Robson, there will likely be an empty seat on the town council.

Collins’ council seat, along with those held by Stephen Cranford and Cynthia Ingram, are both up for re-election.

Cranford filed, as did newcomer Cindi Murray. Ingram, however, did not.

The aforementioned municipal elections will be held Nov. 5.

Dobbins Heights Mayor Antonio Blue is facing two challengers this year: Rhonda Gore and Laperria Andrews.

The mayor retained his seat in 2015 against three challengers, including former council member Gracie Jackson, with more than 60 percent of the vote.

Council member Mary Ann Gibson also filed for re-election on Wednesday, but no word yet from Barara Young. Young was elected and Gibson re-elected in the same 2015 race.

With two council seats up for grabs, two other newcomers have thrown their proverbial hats in the ring: Edward Tender and Revonna Magee. Tender filed July 12, Magee on July 15.

The Dobbins Heights election will be Oct. 8.
