ROCKINGHAM — A thunderstorm moving across Richmond County brought strong winds, rain and hail Monday afternoon.

The National Weather Service in Raleigh never issued a watch or warning, but a hazardous weather outlook said scattered showers were possible throughout central North Carolina.

That possibility turned to reality as heavy downpours had rainwater covering roads and blasting out of gutters, through parking lots and down the sides of city streets.

There was even pea-sized hail falling in downtown Rockingham. One reader reported quarter-sized hail near Carter Funeral Home.

The Hamlet Depot and Museums reported briefly losing power.

There were several wrecks that may have been weather-related, but that has not yet been confirmed.

Residents in Ellerbe and Norman just reported cloudy skies.

There is a chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms during the overnight hours and throughout the week, according to the NWS forecast.
