Officers find meth, pills in Hamlet drug bust

HAMLET — Two men are facing a number of drug charges, including meth trafficking, after an off-duty officer noticed suspicious activity Tuesday morning.

According to Capt. Randy Dover of the Hamlet Police Department, the officer, who works with another law enforcement agency in the county, called him after recognizing 24-year-old Cameron Allen Miles of Hamlet and saw what appeared to be a hand-to-hand drug transfer around 9:15 a.m. at a local gas station.

Officers from HPD arrived on scene and, according to Dover, there was marijuana and a set of scales in plain view inside a 1994 Honda Accord, which led to a search.

During that search, officers reportedly found:

  • 424.5 grams of methamphetamine (nearly 1 pound)
  • 3.5 grams of cocaine
  • 101 bars of Xanax
  • Seven tablets of benzodiazepines
  • 1 gram of marijuana
  • Scales, baggies and needles

Officers also reportedly recovered .45-caliber Smith & Wesson handgun reported stolen to the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office.

Miles and 25-year-old Tryon Campbell Evans of Rockingham were arrested without warrant are each charged with: one count of trafficking in methamphetamine; two counts of possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance; two counts possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule IV controlled substance; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule VI controlled substance; maintaining a vehicle, dwelling or place for a controlled substance; and one misdemeanor count each of possession of marijuana paraphernalia and drug paraphernalia.

Miles was also charged with possession of a stolen firearm.

The two were booked into the Richmond County Jail — Evans under a $150,000 secured bond, Miles under a $175,000 secured bond — and are scheduled to appear in court April 1.

Online court records both currently have pending charges.

Miles has an April 15 court date on the following charges: possession a Schedule I controlled substance; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance; simple possession of a Schedule III controlled substance; discharging a firearm in the city limits (Rockingham); discharging a firearm into an occupied dwelling or moving vehicle; injury to personal property; and carrying a concealed gun.

Evans has a March 29 court date on the following charges: larceny of a motor vehicle; felony conspiracy; robbery with a dangerous weapon; conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon; larceny of ungathered crops; and a probation violation.

Court records show Evans is supposed to appear in court in Forsyth County April 29 on the following charges: obtaining property by false pretenses; misdemeanor larceny; possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver a Schedule II controlled substance; possession of drug paraphernalia; and carrying a concealed weapon.

Records with the N.C. Department of Public Safety Division of Adult Correction show Evans was convicted in February 2020 of larceny of ungathered crops, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance and larceny from the person. He was given a 24-month suspended sentence.

Four months later, Evans was convicted of possession with intent to sell a Schedule II controlled substance in Brunswick County and served less than five months behind bars. His parole is slated to end Aug. 10.

Records show no prior convictions for Miles in the state.

All defendants facing criminal charges are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
