SEMSAC soccer, baseball and softball playoffs set

Several Richmond County middle school teams made the 2019 SEMSAC playoffs

ROCKINGHAM — The Southeastern Middle School Athletic Conference baseball, softball and boys’ and girls’ soccer playoff brackets are set, with three of four Richmond County schools in the mix for a title.

Ellerbe soccer teams clinch No. 1 seeds

The Ellerbe Middle School boys’ and girls’ soccer teams just finished their best respective seasons in program history, both going 8-1 and earning the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. The road to the SEMSAC title will run through Ellerbe.

The Hamlet Middle School girls also finished 8-1 (lone loss to Ellerbe) and will be the No. 2 seed, and the Red Ram boys’ team finished one game behind the Wildcats also for the second seed. Ellerbe’s boys defeated Spring Hill Middle School last week to win the regular-season conference title outright.

All of Ellerbe and Hamlet’s teams will receive a first-round bye. Rockingham Middle School’s boys and girls will also get a shot at the title, both earning the No. 3 seed. The Rockets and Lady Rockets finished the regular season 7-2.

The No. 3 Lady Rockets will host No. 6 Spring Hill, and the No. 3 Rockets will welcome in No. 6 West Hoke Middle School. The winner of the No 3./No. 6 matchup will head to Hamlet in the second round.

Ellerbe’s boys will will face the winner of No. 4 East Hoke and No. 5 Sandy Grove middle schools, and the girls will take on either No. 4 Sandy Grove or No. 5 Carver middle schools. Dates and times have yet to be announced.

Ellerbe baseball’s team (5-4) squeezed in as the No. 5 seed thanks to a three-game winning streak to close the regular season. The Wildcats will travel to No. 4 Anson Middle School Orange with a chance to face Carver, which they didn’t get to face in the regular season (rain out).

The Lady Rocket (6-2) softball team rounds out the Richmond County teams in the playoffs, and will host No. 6 East Hoke in the opening round. Dates and times have yet to be announced.

None of the Cordova Middle School teams qualified for the SEMSAC playoffs. ROSports will update playoff brackets as dates, times and results are announced.
