CAMERON — There were no signs of rust for the Richmond Senior High School boys’ tennis team on Monday, which returned to competitive play for the first time in nearly three weeks.

On the road at Union Pines High School, the Raiders completed the two-match season sweep of the Vikings behind a 7-2 final score.

“I was really impressed with how well everyone played today despite it being so long between matches,” head coach Jessica Covington said. “The boys practiced over break and were ready to play today.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve been able to beat Union Pines twice in a season. I’m really proud of our team and the effort the boys have put in to get to this point.”

Playing the first to eight points, it was No. 4 sophomore Jordan Jacobs who had the lone shutout in singles play. He defeated Cam Deibel 8-0, one of Richmond’s four singles victories.

Also cruising to a large margin of victory was No. 1 senior Ty Murray, who handed Aaron Scodius an 8-2 loss.

Other singles winners were No. 6 junior Will Whitley 8-5 over Landon Patterson, and No. 3 senior Ethan McDonald edged Joey Tortora 9-7.

No. 2 senior Matthew Burns (4-8) and No. 5 junior Brent Humann (3-8) came up short against Jackson Carmichael and Micah Wortham.

Needing to take just one of the three doubles matches, the Raiders won all three to secure the match win.

The No. 1 duo of Murray and Burns won 8-3, followed by No. 2 McDonald and Jacobs 8-4 and the No. 3 pairing of Humann and Whitley 8-5.

Richmond (6-2, 6-2 SAC) will host Lee County High School for another Sandhills Athletic Conference match on Wednesday. Action will start at 4 p.m.
