OPINION: Democrats' glaring strategic mistake

Yesterday, I took a first look at turnout from the 2020 election. What keeps haunting me is the discrepancy between Democratic and Republican turnout.

OPINION: Prone to radicalization

The Electoral College declared Joe Biden the winner of this year’s presidential election. For rational people, it was no surprise. For too many Republicans, it was the continuation of a huge conspiracy to steal the election from the American people. They’ve never really been able to articulate how the fraud occurred or who led this secret insurgency of millions, but they are sure it happened.

If the past 20 years of elections has shown us anything, the United States, as a whole, has become a center-left nation. Democrats have won the popular vote in every presidential election but one since 2000 and they won a large majority of Congressional votes in 2018. The trend is not changing and it explains why Republicans have adopted anti-democratic policies, strategies, and tactics.

With the Thanksgiving holiday, we can expect a spike in COVID-19 cases on top of the spike that is already occurring.

OPINION: The Southern strategy realized

A little over 50 years ago, the GOP made a deal with the devil and now he’s let the world know that he’s claimed the party’s soul. Donald Trump is the culmination of Nixon’s Southern Strategy that invited the racist wing of the Democratic Party into the GOP.

OPINION: North Carolina against the grain

Polls coming in around the country show a country that could be closely divided in the electoral college while seeing a blow out in the popular vote or a country that handily elects Joe Biden president of the United States. In North Carolina, we might see something different than the rest of the nation. For the past two presidential cycles, we have diverged from the nation as a whole.

OPINION: Like 2016 all over again?

I’m having a sense of déjà vu about the election. Maybe it’s just PTSD from 2016, but, back then, I believed Hillary Clinton would win in a walk at this point in the election. The first cracks in my belief came when I drove across the heart of the state along rural roads. Virtually every yard had a Trump-Pence sign. Stores had them, too. And yet the news articles I read gave little indication of the momentum.

Over the past few months, Democrats have held steady leads in most of North Carolina. A Morning Consult poll out yesterday has Cal Cunningham up by eight points, 47-39 and has Joe Biden leading Trump by three, 49-46. Numbers like that have been steady for most of the year. With September just a week away, Democrats appear to be in a strong position in the state, but there’s a lot of time left.

It’s Biden-Harris and it’s good for North Carolina Democrats. From the time Biden announced he would pick a woman as a running mate, Kamala Harris seemed the logical choice.

COLUMN: Wagging the dog

Donald Trump is invading American cities with the “jack-booted government thugs” the NRA warned us about 25 years ago. He’s sending federal law enforcement from a mishmash of agencies dressed in combat fatigues to attack American citizens.
