To the editor:
This is in response to Mr. Maples’ defense and interpretation of the recent hunters being charged with various and numerous charges.
These charges had nothing to do with an attack on those who hunt with dogs. It is a proper indictment on illegal hunting practices that have gone unchecked for far too long. The numerous violations are well deserved. You, Mr. Maples, seem to have forgotten to mention the illegal taking of big game on closed game lands, the numerous hunters who exceeded season limits and the exuberant amount of unregistered kills. These hunters think themselves to be sportsmen, when in fact their actions destroy the sport. Unreported harvesting can result in a much lower population of animals than thought of by those who set the limits. The NCWRC relies on proper information to maintain a healthy population.
As for the dog hunting issue; if you choose this style of hunting you are afforded no additional privileges. You must follow the same rules. You must be able to effectively control your dogs.
The trespassing charges are also simple to avoid. I was taught very young to go to the land owner and ask permission to track a wounded animal. You do not have the right to hunt wherever you want, just because you are a member of an exclusive club.
Finally, for those who think this all to be ridiculous I offer this. The deer you killed illegally, that trophy you took even though you were over your limit or even the doe you harvested because you don’t know how to be selective, could have been some kid’s first deer. That deer could have been the culmination of a father and daughter bonding day. These people broke the law. If you can’t follow the rules, you should never walk into the woods.
