ROCKINGHAM — For the second time in as many tries, the Richmond Senior High School basketball teams will not play a regularly scheduled game.

Richmond athletic director Rob Ransom confirmed that Tuesday’s home openers have been postponed.

In an email to the Richmond Observer, Ransom cited COVID-19 protocols surrounding Jack Britt’s program as the reason for the delay.

The Lady Raiders and head coach Teddy Moseley saw their game last Friday at Pinecrest High School also postponed after Moore County Schools canceled all after-school activities due to the threat of wintry weather.

Head coach Donald Pettigrew and the boys’ squad hasn’t played since last week’s opener at Purnell Swett High School. The Raiders’ game at Pinecrest was previously postponed due to COVID-19 precautions involving the Patriots.

No other decision has been made for the teams to make up the games against Pinecrest or Jack Britt at the time of publication. To date, Richmond’s teams have played just one of its first three games of the season.

Other Sandhills Athletic Conference teams like Scotland and Purnell Swett high schools’ boys’ basketball teams are quarantined following the game between the two on Friday. Hoke County High School's boys' team has yet to play a game this season, and Lumberton High School is not playing at all this week.

Ransom said that the SAC athletic directors met Monday to discuss how to address the issue of teams not getting to play games and facing the challenge of quarantine.

A second meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, with hopes of having a plan in place moving forward.

This is a developing story. The Richmond Observer will update any future changes.
