LAURINBURG – Throughout the course of the inaugural Richmond Raider swimming season, the Raider boys and girls swim teams have had to focus more on improving week-by-week rather than trying to compete with the very talented and tenured groups from Pinecrest and Jack Britt.

So, any victories over the two dominant squads are huge accomplishments for the program.  Richmond got one such victory Wednesday night.

In the last conference meet before Christmas break, held on December 13, Richmond finished fourth under Pinecrest, Jack Britt, and Lumberton in the boys 200-yard Freestyle Relay with a combined time of 2:01.87.

On Wednesday, the relay team comprised of Brice Billingsley, Shane Summey, Clint Snipes, and Jimmy Cooley, cut an impressive 12 seconds off of that time.  Their team-best 1:49.17 time was not only good enough to push them ahead of Lumberton, but they also leapfrogged a very good Jack Britt squad in the event finishing second only to Pinecrest.

That wasn’t Richmond’s only noteworthy performance of the night.  Greyson Way, of the Lady Raiders, had a very successful evening.  She finished fifth out of 48 in the girls 50-yard Freestyle with a time of 31.68, her best time in that event this season.

Jimmy Cooley finished with a personal-best 26 seconds in the boys 50-yard Freestyle, helping him to finish third out of 43 swimmers.  Dakota Locklear, who finished 24th in the 50-yard Freestyle a month ago, catapulted himself into the top 10 with a time of 29.02.  His ninth-place finish was the result of cutting four and half seconds off of his 33.31 time from December 13.

In the girls 100-yard Freestyle, Altman Griffin, Makenzie Webb, and Aerial Spooner finished fifth through seventh, respectively.  Spooner clocked in at 1:22.99, which was her best in the event cutting nearly six and a half seconds off of her time from the last meet.

In the boys 200-yard Freestyle, Carter Roberson finished with a time of 2:52.75, beating his best time by over seven seconds (3:00.49 on December 6).

Wednesday’s meet was the final regular season meet of the season.  The Sandhills Athletic Conference championship meet will take place on Saturday, January 27, at noon at St. Andrews.  Check back with the Richmond Observer for a list of Richmond Senior High School participants.
