ROCKINGHAM — A late-game comeback fell short for the junior varsity Richmond Renegades on Tuesday.

Hosting Lee County to start their final Central Carolina Scholastic Summer League series, the JV Renegades lost 10-3.

Both teams played a scoreless first two innings, but Lee County scored nine runs in the top of the third inning. The visitors added their final run in the top of the fifth.

Richmond tried to make a late push, scoring its three runs in the bottom of the fifth, but the nine-spot by Lee County was too much to overcome.

The JV Renegades started their scoring when Evan Hodges bunted the ball and reached on an error. That miscue allowed Riley Brown (walk) to score and Brooks Calhoun (single) to move to third.

Calhoun scored on a passed ball a couple of pitches later, and an error on a Davis Faw grounder to third scored Hodges for the team’s final run.

Richmond tallied six hits in the loss, with three coming from Landon Taylor, all of which were singles. Calhoun, Cain Hunsucker and Jason Gainey each had a single.

Hodges started on the mound and threw 2.1 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits. He struck out one batter and walked one.

Taylor tossed two-thirds of an inning, earning strikeouts for both outs, but gave up an unearned run on one hit. Brown finished the final four innings, surrendering just one unearned run on four hits.

The JV Renegades (8-4) close their summer season on the road Thursday at Lee County. First pitch is set for 4:30 p.m.
