ROCKINGHAM — Keeping its perfect record intact to start the season, the Rockingham Middle School boys’ basketball team earned another win on Wednesday.

Playing host to Anson Middle School, and hitting the hardwood for the first time since before the holiday break, the Rockets defeated the Bearcats 39-19.

Two Rockets reached double figures on the scoreboard, led by Jaden Hamilton’s 19 points and Chance Crowder’s 10 points. Also finding the basket in the win were Domonic Tillman (5 points), Keonta Pegues (3 points) and Andrea Streeter (2 points).

The start of the game was fast paced with both teams’ defense dominating the game. The Rockets and Bearcats combined for five steals, three blocks and only five points in the first five minutes.

That’s when Hamilton started finding the basket. After an Anson layup cut Rockingham’s early lead to 4-3, Hamilton drove into the lane for an easy layup and then scored again 20 seconds later after an Anson turnover.

Ten seconds later, Crowder picked off the Bearcats near center court, scored on a layup and was fouled in the process. He connected on the free throw to extend Rockingham’s lead to 11-3 as the first quarter winded down.

Defense reigned again to start the second quarter with Anson outscoring Rockingham 4-3 in the first 8:40 of the 10-minute quarter. In the final 1:20, the Rockets went on a 7-1 run to take a 21-8 lead into the break.

The Rockets and Bearcats combined for nine steals, three blocks, and eight turnovers in the third quarter to keep scoring low once again. Anson outscored Rockingham 4-3 with a layup from Hamilton and a free throw from Crowder accounting for all of the Rockets’ third quarter scoring.

Streeter fired up the Rocket bench with a put back in the early moments of the fourth quarter for his only points of the game.  From there Rockingham outscored Anson 11-7 with Hamilton contributing 8 points down the stretch.

The Rockets (3-0) will host familiar in-county opponent Ellerbe Middle School on Thursday.
